NYC Mayor Demands ICE Abolishment After Bronx Shooting With Child In Car
NEW YORK, New York (NYCJ) — New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is calling for the abolishment of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after a federal immigration officer shot a man inside a vehicle with a 5-year-old child in the back seat in Marble Hill.
The shooting occurred around 4 p.m. Thursday, October 8, in the Bronx neighborhood, as families and children were reportedly outside following the school day. The New York Police Department identified the injured man as 28-year-old Oscar Belgal. The child was later located safe with a family member, according to police officials.
Mamdani condemned the operation, saying the agents wore construction-style vests and face coverings that concealed their identities, making it difficult for people nearby to recognize them as federal immigration officers.
“What happened today was an outrage,” Mamdani said during a news conference, arguing that the tactics raised serious concerns about public safety and civil liberties. He also said his efforts to negotiate with President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin for Belgal’s release were unsuccessful.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said preliminary evidence indicated that at least one federal agent fired seven rounds, striking Belgal in the neck. He was initially taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital in stable condition before federal agents assumed custody.
Federal officials described the incident as occurring during a targeted enforcement operation. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain subject to investigation.
Mamdani reiterated his demand for ICE to leave New York City, declaring that the agency should be abolished. The shooting has intensified scrutiny of federal immigration enforcement tactics in residential neighborhoods and renewed calls for a transparent investigation.
